Social connectedness means having meaningful social networks and can protect individuals from the harmful effects of social isolation and loneliness. Social connectedness is important for the positive effects it has on the psychosocial and physical health of all individuals. Traditional social networks, which involve face-to-face contacts, have proven troublesome for individuals with disabilities and older adults to access. Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the use of online social networking sites like Facebook. Participation in online social network sites provides individuals with disabilities and older adults with more accessible ways of staying connected. It offers feelings of connectedness like traditional networks.
